سيطرت شخصية سايمون كوليس، سفير بريطانيا لدى المملكة العربية السعودية على اهتمام الصحف العالمية، ومواقع التواصل الاجتماعي، بعد إشهار إسلامه وأدائه فريضة الحج برفقة زوجته السيدة هدى مجركش، السورية الأصل. وبحسب صحيفة «سبق» السعودية، صرح السفير البريطاني لدى المملكة أنه قرر اعتناق الإسلام بعدما “قضى نحو 30 عاماً وسط المجتمعات الإسلامية، وعرف الإسلام على حقيقته، وأن الإسلام هو منبع رسالة السلام لأقطار العالم كافة.
وقال السفير سايمون كوليس، على حسابه الشخصي بموقع التواصل الاجتماعي «تويتر»: “إنني أسلمت بعد 30 عامًا من البقاء في مجتمعات مسلمة، وقبيل زواجي من هدى مجركش”.
يعد السفير سايمون كوليس أول سفير بريطاني للمملكة يؤدي فريضة الحج بعد إسلامه، ويُذكر أن “كوليس” يتحدث العربية بطلاقة، وهو أب لخمسة أطفال، وعُين سفيرًا لبريطانيا في السعودية في نهاية يناير عام 2015، وكان قد انضم إلى وزارة الخارجية البريطانية أواخر العام 1978 بعد دراسته للغة العربية، وكان أول منصب له في البحرين، ثم تنقل في منصب سفير بين قطر والعراق وسوريا، إلى جانب خدمته في كل من البصرة وعَمان ونيودلهي.
