استيقظ سالم على ملّة باردة. وسكون تام. بدا من العابر. فرأى والدته تتشمس. (وش تعبين عندك يامه)؟ شوفة عينك يا حبابي. صمطة في البيت. قلت أخرج أدفّي عمري في الشارقة. فين غدت (سالمة اللسلوسة) مع الصبح. سرحت تستقي. ردّت عليه الأم. وأضافت «يا ولد الحلال، ارفق عليها، وين تقسّم عمرها المسكينة». نزل إلى السفل، افتك رباط الحمارة، حمل الحلس والخُرج، وضعهما فوق ظهرها، شدّهما، اقتادها إلى جدار ظلة المسيد، وركب. دلدل أرجوله. نغزها، فانطلقت به وهو يرسل كلمات التوديع لأمه.
مرّ الوادي فدنقت تشرب من الغيل، نزل عن ظهرها، تقمقمت ما يسر الله لها. عاد إلى محاولة الركوب،
وبحكم أنه قصير القامة، حاول يقفز على ظهرها مرة، مرتين، لم ينجح، اقتادها، ومشى أمامها. لمح أحد الفلاحين متحفشا ينقي قصبة ثفا. سأله «وين غادي تا الحزة؟ أجاب: (هابط السوق). أردف: كيف لك؟ قال «أقضي لزوم». بلغ السوق. شدّ وثاقها بين الحمير، تسوّق ساعة، سحب خطاه دون أن يحمل معه سوى حزمة ريحان أهدته إحدى معارفه.
ركب الحمارة تذكّر أن الوسمية على الأبواب. درّج الأفكار. قال «والله أنها لانحلت. وما تلي على الله». لقي بو جمعان ما يزال في مزرعته. محني ظهره ويغني ببعض القصايد. «ولعون يا بو جمعان» انتغز. ونظر إليه قائلا: «وشبك أخرعتاني الله يخرعك». نزل إليه. صافحه. وغرز في عقاله خوط ريحان. عرض عليه. يعطيه البلاد خبرا ليزرعها. وما أنتجت ينقسم بينهما. والذرو والحرث عليه.
ابتهج بو جمعان. وسرح من ثاني يوم يحرث ويذرى. في نهاية الموسم. حاول سالم ينال شيئا من حنطة. فلم يفلح. ادعى بو جمعان أن البلاد بلاده. وسالم ما له إلا سليله. وأقسم أنه باعه. والدليل أنه حرث وصرم والقرية كلها رأت وسمعت. قالت سالمة: ما معك شهود عليه؟ أجاب: منين لي شهود ما كان معي إلا حمارتي. لكن الله عالم وشاهد على كل جاحد. قالت: اطلع فوق البيت وطق بالصيح. قال «إن صحنا فينا. وإن سكتنا فينا» علمي وسلامتكم.
